Collecting Terms

In 1930 the United Stated Customs Bureau officially defined antiques as anything made before 1830. This date was selected because historians regard it as the start of the American Industrial Revolution. In 1966 that law was changed so that items that were 100 years old would be officially classified as antiques. The Department of Homeland Security has recently made new laws on importing antiques with strict guidelines. Age is relative and antique dealers and collectors use more defined terms.

Antique - An item which is at least 100 years old and is collected due to rarity and condition. An antique to date, was made in 1907 and years prior to 1907.

Almost Antique - An item made between 75 to 99 years ago. An almost antique to date was produced between the years of 1908 to 1932.

Vintage - An item made between 25 to 74 years ago. A vintage item to date would be produced between the years of 1933 to 1982.

Collectible - An item of that is newer than 25 years in age. A collectible item to date would be produced between the years of 1983 to 2007.

Collect - To accumulate specific items as a hobby.

Collecting - Acquiring specific items based on a particular interest that are highly organized, carefully cataloged, and attractively displayed.

Collector - A person who collects specific items of personal interest.

Completists - Collectors who have assembled complete collection of specific items and then specifically try to assemble another complete collection of another specific set of items.

Hobby - An activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation rather than for financial reward.

Memorabilia - An Item that is treasured for it's connection to a historical event, culture or entertainment.

Souvenir - An Item that is treasured for it's connection to a specific place and location of vacation or business trip.

Super Collector - An individual who has accumulated a very large collection of a particular interested set of items, which is for the most part complete with many sub categories in the collection.
